Congratulations to Donny Schatz/ Juan Pablo Montoya the Student/ CCWS Weekend at Texas/ Shame Shame Everyone Knows Your Name

Congratulations to Donny Schatz

Congratulations to Donny Schatz, his sponsors and team for winning the 2006 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Championship. Schatz, his family and his sponsors have made sacrifices over the years to get to this point. He won the Knoxville Nationals this season and then almost suffered potentially fatal injuries when his sprint car caught fire after an accident in California this season. It has been a long road for Donny Schatz and company. He and his team deserve this championship.

Juan Pablo Montoya the Student

Chip Ganassi Racing has dedicated the rest of Juan Pablo Montoya’s season to learning. That is just what he did Saturday at his first NASCAR Busch Series race at Memphis. Montoya bumped, banged and spun himself and others.

“He did a great job,” said crew chief Brad Parrot. “We adjusted on the car four times, got spun out, come back kind of like Talladega a couple of months ago when we come from the back to the front but we just can't go as far this time. I think we learned a lot, we did a great job.”

In the beginning of the race JPM took his time working with the car, track and other drivers. As the race went on he drove the car a little harder and took more chances. He also tried to show good etiquette, which was not always appreciated.

“Somebody's faster than you, for example, let them through,” said Montoya. “And I did that at the beginning of the race. There are some guys out there that they will race like it was the last lap. You know, he can't really run like that and even one of the guys, you're behind the safety car and they came by and give you the finger, it's like what are you doing, it feels like kindergarten.”

No word on who told Montoya that he was No. 1. He may not be No. 1 right now but chrew chief Brad Parrot says a championship could be in Juan Pablo Montoya’s future.

“I think it's real strange we are not sitting in victory lane right now more to it. You know, it's his first race, you know what I mean. You’ll see this guy as the Nextel champion in the next two years. If Chip Ganassi Racing, if we can step our program more so with him than we are our other drivers and we can do that. This guy can win races, there's to doubt in my mind.”

Montoya’s next goal is a top ten but don’t get him wrong. Winning is still everything to the Colombian.

“If I'm Top 10, yes, it's like a victory. For me, I want to win. As I told you, we have the learning process and everything, but at the end of the day, we're here to win. We're not here to, oh, we finished 10th, he was great, we came back, and we showed we had a car to be further up.”

JPM in Final Three Busch Races

To no one’s surprise, Chip Ganassi announced that Juan Pablo Montoya would race in the final three NASCAR Busch Series races of the season. In other JPM news, Chip Ganassi Racing is going bilingual. The No. 42 team is revamping their website to be read in both Spanish and English. NASCAR’s media website has offered bilingual news for some time now.

More Bilingual News
NASCAR and her new partner ESPN also jumped on bilingual bandwagon. ESPN Deportes Radio and MRN Radio will work together on a two minute segment to air on ESPN Deportes Radio stations in 18 U.S. markets and Sirius Satellite Radio. ESPN Deportes Radio reporter Andrés Agulla covered the Memphis Busch race last weekend.

CCWS Weekend at Texas
Champ Car never raced at Texas due to drivers almost blacking out on the highbanks but this weekend two former CCWS competitors will. Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge and Max Papis, No. 36 Sport Clips Chevrolet competed together in Champ Car during the 2000-01 seasons. The CCWS twosome will be joined by Sam Hornish Jr. in two weeks at Phoenix. Will Sam head in the same direction? Robin Miller thinks so. See his column at SPEEDTV.com.

Shame Shame Everyone Knows Your Name
It has apparently been done for some time now in NASCAR but Robby Gordon is the first driver to get caught. Gordon was penalized 50 owner and driver points, fined $15,000 and placed on double secret probation Wednesday for intentionally causing a caution at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The money may not matter but the points will. The points portion of the penalty is twice the amount that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was penalized for intentionally spinning himself out last year at Bristol. NASCAR’s point, this throwing debris stuff has to stop. Gordon says he will appeal.
