My Take on Daytona TV Coverage
On Assignment is a Winner
On Assignment with Dave Despain was a great show. The first episode took us through the history books to show us how the Daytona 500 came to be.
The program focused on the racing on the beach and how it evolved to stock cars when the Bonneville Salt Flats convinced the rest of the racers to leave. Interestingly enough, the first stock car race on the beach was sanctioned by AAA. AAA eventually became USAC. Now ISC which the France family has a majority steak in, is assisting USAC in the new generation pavement Silver Crown car.
NASCAR Raceday Review
NASCAR Raceday was well produced and even though it was a long program, there was little about it that seemed to drag.
Totally (now extinct) NASCAR’s Vicki Johnson resurfaced on a feature with Elliot Saddler. Unless you were a huge Saddler fan, the feature was a waste of time much like Totally NASCAR.
Home Depot and SPEED did a good job working together to build the brand into the program with the set. The set itself is a unique setup in the middle of the fans.
NASCAR on NBC
The prerace show was good but not as good as SPEED’s NASCAR Raceday. The program did feature a prerace concert by big hair BonJovi.
It was only yesterday that young women and some men had big hair. Obviously they still follow Bon Jovi.
He also had some other babes surrounding him.
I can do without Wally’s World but the Olympic Gold medalist seemed to enjoy the ride.
I can also do without Bill Webber. Webber is as pleasant as diarrhea. They need to bring Alan Bestwick.
Wally Dallenbach is ok and I really like Benny Parsons. The new ABC/ESPN broadcast team will be better. The FOX crew will take over next week.
As you can see in this still, guest pace car driver Jay Leno was quite serious about his responsibilities. Leno is a serious gearhead. It is refreshing to have a big time star who puts a lot into his guest job.
