Motorsports journalists Curt Cavin and Steve Ballard report that Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven have reached an ownership-sharing agreement reguarding the impending merger of the Indy Racing League and Champ Car World Series. The IRL CEO and Champ Car World Series co-owner told the Star that details of the agreement have yet to be worked out. This news represents major movement towards mending a fence that caused Open Wheel racing to almost bleed to death while NASCAR grew following the 1996 split. George told the Indianapolis Star that both he and Kalkhoven will share ownership of the new merged series. The Star says the two leaders could appoint a neutral party to work out differences. The issues of chassis, engine and schedule must still be resolved. Calvin and Ballard report that George said he and Kalkhoven have discussed plans to have CCWS team run at the 2007 Indy 500. The Star says George and Kalkhoven are disappointed that the process has not moved quicker but both sides believe the merger will occur.
