Just Leave Us Alone
In an article in today’s Indianapolis Star Curt Cavin reports that the reunification of Open Wheel racing in North America is inching along quietly. In the article, Calvin reports that Champ Car World Series majority owner Kevin Kalkhoven says the best way for the Indy Racing League and CCWS to come together is for people outside the two organizations, mainly the media, to leave them alone. Kalkhoven told the Star that negotiating a deal in the media is not the thing to do. Kevin Kalkhoven told Calvin that he and Tony George have met several times including an unscheduled meeting at the Race of Champions event in Paris in December. The Indianapolis Star reports that the two have even skied together and discussed the future of Open Wheel racing.
"We're not negotiating, and there's no deal," he told the Indianapolis Star. "We're talking about what we have in common, not what we have different."
A reunified schedule will not happen until at least 2007 as the 2006 race dates are set in stone for both series.
SPEED’s David Phillips agrees with Kalkhoven in his column at SPEEDTV.com

PR goddess wins Major Award

A woman who has helped countless Open Wheelers in the PR realm has won the biggest honor for PR folks in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Judy Kouba-Dominick was presented with NASCAR’s PR Rep of the Year Award last week in Daytona. Kouba-Dominick is a trackside communications manager working for General Motors. JKD’s father raced midgets, sprint cars and Silver Crown cars in the West and Midwest regions. Her brother still races in the WISSOTA Sprint Series. Her career includes over 20 years of experience in journalism, public relations and marketing across a spectrum of racing series including AMA Motorcycle road racing, USAC midget racing, NHRA, IRL and all three of NASCAR’s premier series. I had the pleasure of meeting JKD in 2003 while she was working with Donny Schatz. There are few people out there that are as good as her in the business. Congratulation Judy on your well deserved honor!
