Hornish on the Pole at Texas
Sam Hornish is on the pole for Saturday night’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.

The 2006 Indy 500 winner bested Dan Weldon by .0041 of a second. The field was actually quite close. Less than half a second separates the pole sitter from Buddy Lazier. Felipe Giaffone did not take a qualifying lap.

”We want to make it to the end of the race and not give ourselves any problems,” Hornish told the IMS Radio Network. “This is one of the tracks that you always you have to stay heads up.”

Hornish should know. He has more wins at Texas than any other IndyCar driver. Eddie Cheever was having problems finding drafting partners during practice today at Texas. His qualifying times were below his practice times. PJ Chesson is not at Texas this weekend. Team Panther has more wins at Texas than any other IndyCar team.

Why Hasn’t Danica Won Yet?
Fans commented to me last weekend at Watkins Glen that Danica Patrick hasn’t been smiling as much was she was last year. Is she feeling pressure of having not won a race. She shouldn’t have to bare that burden. Danica will make her 22nd IndyCar Series start this weekend. The average number of starts it takes an IndyCar Series driver to win their first race is 33. She won’t hit race number 33 until the 2007 season.

Finally Dan Gets the Spotlight

After having to live in the shadow of Danica Patrick last season. The 2005 IndyCar Series and Indy 500 champ will bask in the limelight Saturday night. A one-hour documentary titled "Dan Wheldon's Race for Indy" will air at 8pm prior to ESPN's coverage of the Bombardier LearJet 500K.

Carnegie Puts Down the Mic
In a story in today’s Indianapolis Star, Curt Calvin reports that longtime Indianapolis Motor Speedway announcer Tom Carnegie is stepping away from the microphone after 61 years.
