Sam Hornish Wins the Indy 500!
Sam Hornish Jr. won the second closest racing Indianapolis 500 history. Hornish passed rookie Marco Andretti on the front stretch just yards from the finish to win the 500 by .0635 of a second. The win almost didn’t happen. During pitstops, Hornish pulled away early and the fuel nozzle got stuck. It snapped the fuel hose. Sam Hornish had to stop while the damaged hose was extracted from the car. He was given a drive through penalty for leaving his pitbox with the fuel buckeye still in the car. Team Penske buckled down and put their driver in a position to win. A caution brought out by Felipe Giaffone led to a dream restart. Rookie Marco Andretti led his father Michael and Sam Hornish to the green flag. The 19 year old pulled away while Michael and Hornish battled for second. Hornish got by Michael and then caught up to Marco with one lap to go but then had to get on the brakes because he tried to pass at the wrong time. Sam Hornish regained his composure and passed Andretti for the lead coming out of turn 4 on his way to the yard of bricks. Hornish’s win was Roger Penske’s 14th win at the Indianapolis 500.
Marco Andretti Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
With his second place finish, Marco Andretti claimed the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year title and dispelled myths of him not being ready for the IndyCar Series.
Andrettis Race Clean
When it came down to it with Marco and Michael Andretti being chased by Sam Hornish, neither blocked. Sure both made themselves a little wider than normal but both father and son played it clean. Congrats to Sam Hornish who won but even a bigger thumbs up to Marco and Michael Andretti who played it clean and finished second and third.
We will have a complete report soon so please check back.
