Sam Hornish Recovers to Win Indy 500/ Marco Andretti Indy 500 Rookie of the Year/ Kasey Kahne Wins Coke

Sam Hornish Recovers to Win Indy 500
Twice today it looked like it was over but twice today, Sam Hornish Jr. came back to win the Indianapolis 500. Hornish started on the pole but it was his teammate Helio Castroneves who took the early lead.

Jeff Bucknum and his teammate P.J. Chesson ended their day early when Bucknum spun 3 laps into the race collecting Chesson. Six laps later 2005 Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon passed Castroneves for the lead.

On lap 66 Tomas Scheckter ran over the rumble strips in turn four and hit the pit wall attenuator.

A scary moment just seconds later when Jaques Lazier ran over the rear wing and sent a piece flying into the stands.

SPEED TV reported that five people were checked out and were ok.

Two Indy 500 winners got together on lap 110.

Buddy Rice’s and Helio Castroneves’ day ended when Buddy slowed and Helio tried to make it past the 2004 Indy winner.

It didn’t work as Rice came down on Helio and both went into the turn 4 wall hard.

Buddy Rice’s boss David Letterman was upset. Lap 155 Jeff Simmons hit the wall.

On his pitstop on lap 160,

Sam Hornish made a critical mistake,

he pulled away from the pitbox before the refueling was completed

rupturing the fuel hose and loosing valuable time.

He was forced to serve a penalty and made what would be his last pitstop of the day. Lap 178, Marco is 3rd and the ABC crew is giddy. Oh yea, Danica Patrick is 5th. With 3 laps to go in the race, Marco Andretti passed his father, Michael Andretti in Turn 1. Sam Hornish was able to get by Michael Andretti going into Turn 3. Two to go now and Hornish tried to pass Marco low in Turn 3 but had to back out which widened Marco’s lead. Sam Hornish Jr. did not give up

and caught the rookie at the beginning of the front stretch and

passed Andretti to win by the second closest margin in Indy 500 history.

Two times today Hornish should have lost the race but he never gave up and won the Indy 500 on the last lap which was the fastest leading lap of the day by any driver.

Hornish’s win was Roger Penske’s 14th win at the Indianapolis 500. To see more of what happened after the checkerd flag, please visit our sister website http://tvvictorylane.blogspot.com

Marco Andretti Indy 500 Rookie of the Year
With his second place finish, Marco Andretti claimed the Indy 500 Rookie of the Year title and dispelled myths of him not being ready for the IndyCar Series.

Andrettis Race Clean
When it came down to it with Marco and Michael Andretti being chased by Sam Hornish, neither blocked. Sure both made themselves a little wider than normal but both father and son played it clean. Congrats to Sam Hornish who won but even a bigger thumbs up to Marco and Michael Andretti who played it clean and finished second and third.

Kasey Kahne Wins Coke
On a night when most Open Wheelers struggled, Carl Edwards finished on the podium and Kasey Kahne won the Coke 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The night started out rough for Tony Stewart as he cut a right front tire heading into Turn 1 on Lap 33 and slammed the outside wall hard.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released for a fracture in the lower part of his shoulder blade according to FOX.

Ryan Newman also was involved in the spin cycle.

So was Carl Edwards but he kept it off the wall and fought back to finish 3rd.

Casey Mears got loose and spun taking our Kyle Busch. Needless to say, Busch was upset and threw his HANS device at Mears.

Obviously a No No.

Jeff Gordon’s night went south when he lost his brakes and then hit the wall.

Kasey Kahne drove away from dominant Charlotte driver Jimmy Johnson, snapping Johnson’s winning streak at the track.

In a post race interview, Kahne congratulated Sam Hornish and Marco Andretti on their success at Indy. He stated that he would like to run the Indy 500 some day.
