Montoya Could Start NASCAR Career at Memphis
Montoya could begin getting his feet wet in NASCAR by racing in the Busch Series as soon as this fall when he finishes the F1 season with the McLaren-Mercedes team at Brazil on October 22. That means his first race could be the Busch Series race at Memphis on October 28. The other Busch Series races after the F1 Season ends are November 4th at Texas, November 11th at Phoenix and November 18th at Homestead. There are six Busch events that are not on F1 weekends but one would have to believe McLaren-Mercedes would keep Montoya out of the Busch Series until the end of the F1 season.

Leave the pinnicle of motorsports for fendered racing? Yes, that is what Juan-Pablo Montoya is going to do. Chip Ganassi racing announced this morning that the former Indy 500 winner and now F1 driver will drive the No. 42 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series car in 2006. Montoya drove for Ganassi in CART winning the championship in 1999 and the Indy 500 in 2000. He was one of the most popular F1 drivers when I visited the 2005 F1 debaccle at IMS. The Miami, Florida resident raced Jeff Gordon’s Cup car on the IMS road course a few years ago when the two drivers switched cars during an exhibition event. TNT reported during their broadcast today that is was Montoya that called Ganassi to ask about the opening. The F1 star’s contract was up at the end of this season and there was no high profile opening suitable to the Columbian. Juan Montoya will replace Casey Mears, who will drive for Hendrick Motorsports next season.
