Brass...

There is something about racecar drivers that make them different from the rest of us. After watching video of Donny Schatz’s wreck and the ensuing fire, I was shocked to learn that he got right back in the car despite his injuries. He just escaped death thanks to his fellow WoO drivers and the track safety team. He had first-degree burns on the back of his neck. Yet there he was Saturday night, back in a car trying to win at the Gold Cup. He left the Gold Cup with a 304 points lead over Joey Saldana. He easily leads the series in feature wins. Couldn’t he have the rest of the weekend off? No, not Donny Schatz. The North Dakotan did not become the Knoxville Nationals champion this season because he took the easy way out. Schatz toiled for years always being the bridesmaid. He has never been a World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion. He wants that title as well this season.

I have always admired Donny Schatz. He is a different breed. Thursday night was just another chapter in what will be a very memorable season for a driver with brass…

Clint Bowyer in Kinser’s Ride
As we first reported last week, Kraig Kinser will not finish the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season in the No. 46 Morgan Dollar Motorsports entry due to a change in the “business climate-wise.” We could see Kinser in a few more truck races before the season is over or in an ARCA car. Cup driver Clint Bowyer will drive the truck this weekend at New Hampshire.

Dodson to Drive at New Hampshire this Weekend
Cameron Dodson is slated to go NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racing. According to his website, the 18 year old is scheduled to drive the No. 63 MB Motorsports truck at New Hampshire on September 16th, at Las Vegas on September 23rd and at Martinsville on October 21st.

Reutiman to Cup?
Wayne Reutiman’s cousin, David Reutiman reportedly will drive in the NASCAR Nextle Cup Series for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2007 although there has been no official announcement. Wayne Reutiman shares his Silver Crown shop space with his cousin David Reutiman. NASCAR.com has a feature David and the story of his humble life this season. Here is the link. http://www.nascar.com/2006/news/features/lifestyle/09/11/reutimann.new.home/index.html

PRA Race Wednesday
Just a reminder that the PRA Big Car Series will drop the green flag Wednesday night at the Jasper Engines and Transmissions Circle City 100 presented by the Sagamore Health Network at ORP. Ken Schrader and Ryan Newman are expected to be some of the talented drivers in the field.

Swindell at Salem
Kraig Kinser is not on the pre-entry list for this Saturday’s ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Salem Speedway but two other Open Wheelers are. Kevin Swindell is slated to make his fourth start in the series driving the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports entry. Justin Allgaier who sits 11th in series points will drive the No. 16 entry. Saturday’s race is not on TV.

Motorola to Back Patrick

Motorola will sponsor Danica Patrick’s Andretti Green Racing entry in 2007 in the IndyCar Series. The car will be jet black with blue paint reflecting Motorola logos which reportedly kind of looks like the Batmobile. She has also secured sponsorship with Go Daddy.com.

New track near Denver

Colorado may be one step closer to filling the void left by the demise of Pikes Peak International Raceway. International Speedway Corporation purchased the track about a year ago and closed it leaving rumors that the company would build a speedway closer to Denver. An article written by Chris Barge in today’s Rocky Mountain News
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/racing/article/0,1299,DRMN_52_4986365,00.html reports that ISC is looking at land in Commerce City, Colorado. The newspaper says that representatives of International Speedway Corporation are working on a deal that would put the racetrack west of Denver International Airport, around 96th Avenue and E-470. So far nothing official has been submitted to the city's planning department according to Barge. A company spokesman told the newspaper last month that, "there is nothing that has been announced" in Colorado. Racing industry insiders say ISC is looking at placing tracks in the New York city and Washington state areas before looking at Colorado. A new ISC track in Colorado could mean a new facility for USAC to run the Silver Crown pavement division.

CASCAR Purchased by NASCAR
NASCAR has purchased CASCAR, Canada’s top stock car series. The new series will be called the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and will begin racing next May.

Coming up later this week, we will break down the announcement of the World of Outlaws on ESPN2 and tell you what it means to the fans, teams and series.
