Silver Crown Championship Race by the Numbers/ DuQuoin Rewind/ IRL Update
Silver Crown Championship Race by the Numbers
We are down to the final three races in the USAC Silver Crown Series. The points race tightened a bit Sunday night as Bud Kaeding closed the gap to points leader Brian Tyler by 9 points. Kaeding is now only 17 points out of first. The night almost looked like a bad one for the California native.
He missed the practice sessions at DuQuoin while his No. 29 Loan City/ Team ASE crew worked feverishly on the car. Bud Kaeding was able to take time good for 25th quick. Meanwhile Brian Tyler and crew were also forced to the non-qualifier race.
Tyler won that event and Kaeding finished second. Tyler Started 20th and Kaeding who required the aid of a push truck, started 21st in the feature. Tyler gained 13 positions while Kaeding took 17.
Wane Reutiman Jr. was forced to a backup car after a spin during practice, thus giving up most of his owners points for the evening.
Four drivers and four teams are still mathematically eligible for the championship based on my fuzzy math:
Drivers Championship Points Back
Brian Tyler 541 -
Bud Kaeding 524 17
Aaron Pierce 446 95
Wayne Reutiman Jr. 418 123
--- Mathematically Eliminated from Championship ---
Dave Steele 388 153
Minimum estimated points available: Iowa 27, Eldora 9, Kansas 27 = 63
Maximum points available: 198 Difference: 135
Owners Championship Points Back
21 Team Six R 706 -
29 BK Leffler Motorsports 689 17
26 Sam Pierce 611 95
199 Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies 595 111
--- Mathematically Eliminated from Championship ---
00 Reutiman Motorsports 560 146
Minimum estimated points available: Iowa 42, Eldora 24, Kansas 42 = 108
Maximum points available: 243 Difference: 135
Minimum points estimated with 13th place finishes at Iowa and Kansas and 24th place finish at Eldora. More or less cars may be in the three features. This was just a guess based on 2005 and 2006 average numbers.
Seasoned Drivers Put on a Show
Johnny Parsons was the talk of the grandstands when the veteran started from the back and powered past virtually everyone on the high side. Others tried to follow but were unable. Parsons passed people like they were standing still but unfortunately it did not last. It still made for a great show.
Parsons was not the only seasoned driver to show the younger ones how to use the throttle, Roger Rager turned in the fastest time in practice besting the younger Jerry Coons by .148 of a second.
Awesome Crowd
I didn’t get an official count on the crowd but I can say after attending the Ted Horn 100 for four years, this was definitely the best crowd I had seen. The promoter worked tirelessly on promoting the event. They took the cars to football games and anywhere they could think of to promote the race and it worked. The crowd was also very vocal cheering for their favorite driver. The atmosphere was perfect for Silver Crown racing.
Who Could Beat Hines?
Tracy Hines has dominated the last two years at DuQuoin. He has also won the last two Silver Crown races. The No. 37 Indiana Underground Construction team seems to have a lock on the Illinois miles.
Cottle on the Throttle
Shane Cottle came close to beating Hines, leading for the first 41 laps but the USAC veteran was took the lead on lap 42 and Cottle had to settle for 2nd. Still a great run for the Kokomo, Indiana native.
Fisher and D&R Land Sponsor
Dreyer and Reinbold Racing and Sarah Fisher will have a vision care company, Ophthonix, Inc. on board for the final race of the season this weekend at Chicagoland.
In other Sarah Fisher news, according to a news release, the driver of the No. 5 D&R car has relocated back to Indianapolis from California with her fiancé, Andy, and their chocolate lab, Wrigley.
Foyt Returns to the IRL
Another Open Wheeler has come home from NASCARLand. AJ Foyt IV will drive the No. 27 Klein Tools/Canadian Club car for Andretti Green Racing at Chicagoland. Foyt will be filling in for Dario Franchitti, who sustained a concussion Friday during a qualifying session for the Goodwood Revival at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in Goodwood, England.
One AJ Out, Another May be In
Champ Car rising star AJ Allmendinger will drive two races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for Bill Davis Racing. AJ is expected to return to CCWS for the 2007 season but is “testing the waters” over on the fendered side. Hopefully, CCWS will do what is necessary to keep a great American Open Wheel talent in the series. Allmendinger is set to run at New Hampshire International Speedway (Sept. 16) and Talladega Superspeedway (Oct. 7).
