ESPN Mistake Costs Fans First 18 Laps
A mistake at either ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut or at IMS Productions in Indianapolis, Indiana costs IRL fans the first 18 laps of the Motegi race today.
Fans saw the prerace show twice which meant ESPN had to cut part of the race to make up for the lost time. Fans were also cheated of replays of the Ed Carpenter-Thomas Enge accident. I spent 10 years in TV production dealing with live to taped broadcasts so I can give you a good guess of how this happened. First, the race was transmitted live from Japan Television to IMS Production studios in Indianapolis where Rusty Wallace, Scott Goodyear and Marty Reid voiced the race. The race was then transmitted to ESPN master control in Bristol. Either the race was transmitted live to Bristol or it was transmitted later. Either IMS Productions or ESPN either mismarked the prerace segment or just flat-out cued and played the wrong segment. My gut tells me it was an ESPN mistake but I do not know that for sure. Regardless, race fans were cheated by the rare broadcast mistake. I am sure someone got an earful.
Spiderman Visits Japan
Helio Castroneves victory celebration went international Saturday as Spiderman climbed the fence after his first win at Motegi, Japan. Defending IndyCar Series Champion, Dan Weldon finished second.
Race fans might have missed the first wreck on TV, but the IMS Radio Network reported live from Motegi when Thomas Enge and
Ed Carpenter got together near turn four early in the race.
Later in the race on a separate restart, Scott Sharp spun while accelerating on cold tires.
PJ Chesson checked up and first time starter, Jeff Simmons was not able to avoid the incident and flew into the air and flipped.
The hit sent Chesson spinning into the wall.
All drivers were ok.
Dario Franchitti struck two crew members during a pitstop on lap 147.
TrackSide Online.com is reporting that his left rear tire changer was taken to a local hospital for x-rays of his leg.
Felipe Giaffone brushed the wall in turn four damaging front end and ending his day.
Castroneves dominated a good part of the race. With 10 laps to go and he has a 4 second lead. With only five laps left in the race, the Brazilian had a 6 second lead over second place Dan Weldon.
Following his win, he wowed the fans by climbing the fence. Tony Kannan was third and Sam Hornish Jr. finished fourth. Danica Patrick was the last car on the lead lap. She finished 8th. Today’s race was Castroneves’ second win in a row after winning at St. Petersburg a few weeks ago. The teams will now fly back to Indianapolis and start preparing for the Indy 500.

AJ Foyt will not Drive in the Indy 500
IMS Radio Network reported that a spokes person for AJ Foyt racing said that at this time AJ Foyt IV will not be in a car for the Indy 500. The radio network added that they saw someone working on a AJ Foyt IV driver suit but said the suit would not be used in the IndyCar Series. Most likely Ray Evernham will find Foyt a spot, at least part time in the Busch Series as soon as Richmond. ESPN reported on the IRL broadcast that Larry Foyt would drive the second Foyt entry for the Indy 500.
Open Wheelers to Test Goodyear Tires at IMS this Week
NASCAR.com is reporting that Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne and Elliott Sadler will handle the Cup tire testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Monday and Tuesday. Indiana native Jeff Gordon was not selected for the tire test at his home track. This weeks tests will be the fourth such tests for Goodyear this season.
